The Abercrombie Axe

Today, most people associate the Abercrombie & Fitch name with high-end clothing that targets brand-conscious teenagers. However, the Abercrombie Company dates to 1892 (later named Abercrombie & Fitch in 1904), and had an outstanding reputation as a quality outfitter for expeditions and outdoor pursuits. David Abercrombie was a miner, trapper, and engineer who knew the value of quality equipment. When Abercrombie & Fitch couldn’t manufacture equipment that their customers requested, they would partner with other companies and oversee production under the Abercrombie & Fitch name. Such was the case with axes. The primary axe-making partner for Abercrombie & Fitch was the Collins tool company of Collinsville, Connecticut. All of the axes made by Collins for Abercrombie & Fitch carried the famous Collins Legitimus logo on one side with the Abercrombie & Fitch logo on the other side of the poll.

Most of the Abercrombie & Fitch axes produced were camping axes or hatchets. The axes were sold with attractive leather scabbards that included a belt loop and decorative gold-and-black snap sporting the A&F logo.

In 30 years of axe collecting, I’ve only run across three Abercrombie & Fitch axes for sale. The axe pictured is one I purchased at auction. It had been found in the corner of an old Adirondack hardware store that featured a camping section. The axe head was still wrapped in its original paraffin paper under the leather sheath. Such a find is certainly rare, but also stands as a testament to the axe gems still waiting to be found.
